When it comes to protecting your business and improving security, cybersecurity is a commonly overlooked element. But as large hacks become more common and hackers make their virus craftier, improving your cyber security is more and more vital. In this blog we will look at what the major IT security risks are at the moment and then how a managed IT service provider, like ECS, can help you protect your business, data and your customers.

What are some of the major IT security risks?

Phishing

  • Phishing is when a spoof email is sent where a person pretends to be someone else, to trick the recipient into handing over sensitive information or money or downloading a virus.
  • Sensitive information could be your bank card numbers, address, postcode, phone numbers, answers to security questions, or even login information for online accounts; and a virus could be downloaded by opening an email attachment or clicking on a link within the email.

A range of viruses and exploits from hackers and not keeping up to date on the latest risks

  • There are always new viruses appearing. Stealing data, taking down websites and even holding your own information to ransom – staying up to date on the latest viruses is vital, as is having robust business-grade anti-virus software.
  • One of the most common viruses we have seen in recent years is Ransomware. Ransomware is a type of malware that takes your data hostage by threatening to delete it, permanently encrypt it, sell it or publish it unless a ransom is paid. The ransom is normally in bitcoin or another cryptocurrency as they are harder for authorities to track. A common example of this, that you may have heard of on the news, is the Cryptolocker virus.

Insecure passwords

  • Whilst they may be easy to remember, insecure passwords can be huge threats to your cyber security.
  • The most common way hackers ‘crack’ a password is through something called a ‘brute force attack’. This is where an attacker uses a computer to guess password after password extremely quickly. Passwords without symbols, numbers, upper-case and lower-case letters, can make it easy for a hacker to crack your password – leaving you at risk.

Not using multi-factor authentication

  • Whilst having a strong password is extremely helpful, teaming your strong password with multi-factor authentication is highly recommended.
  • MFA is an additional process to verify that it’s really you logging in to your account. In most cases, you can either get a verification code sent to your phone or email, or you can use an authenticator app (such as Google Authenticator) that gives you a verification code that changes often. All you need to do then is to type that extra verification code and you’re in!
  • Whilst it might seem like a bit of a hassle, but it will give you extra peace of mind when it comes to those important accounts.

Not patching for security updates

  • Threats in cyber security are always changing and cyber criminals are always discovering new ways to get into your systems. This is why it’s so important to keep all of your devices updated – from your phone to your printer, your network switch to your NAS. Software updates can contain vital security patches that thwart hackers and reduce vulnerabilities.

Using end-of-life software

  • This is also why it is so important to make sure your equipment can still receive security updates and isn’t End of Life. End of Life means that the software you’re using is so old that the manufacturer is no longer creating updates or vital security patches. This could leave you entirely at risk.

How can managed IT services help improve security?

Knowledge of IT and years of experience dealing with security issues

  • Outsourcing your IT to a managed service provider (MSP) or utilising a managed IT support agreement is like having an group of IT experts ready to keep you up to date on the latest security news and recommendations.
  • Our engineers also have years of experience of keeping businesses like yours secure, from virus removal and data recovery if the worst happens, to preventative proactive work to keep your software and hardware on the latest crucial security patch. An MSP can act as your second brain – here to remind you when things require updates or renewals so you can have complete IT peace of mind.
  • Your MSP is also always available to advise. For example, if you receive an email you think could potentially be phishing, you can send it to your MSP for advice. Or if you would like advice on how you can improve your internal password policy – who better to ask than someone that deals with IT all day for a range of businesses just like yours?

Awareness of threats

  • As MSPs look after multiple businesses, they are always up to date on the latest threats facing businesses. This knowledge helps them to implement security fixes before anything becomes an issue.

Business-grade products

  • Unified Threat Management hardware
  • Utilising a hardware firewall, like a WatchGuard, will act as your first line of defence against hackers and DDOS attacks. ECS are Silver WatchGuard partners and have years of experience installing and maintaining unified threat management hardware.

EDR

  • EDR is the cutting edge of anti-virus protection. It uses AI to counteract threats from both known and brand-new malware, giving you the best protection available on the market today against malware and viruses such as Ransomware.

Back-up

  • With ECS’s managed cloud back-up, your data will be secure if the worse was to happen and you lost all your data (or you accidentally deleted an important file).

Upgrades to old software and hardware to keep you secure

  • Running machines on end-of-life software and hardware means that it’s no longer getting vital security updates, leaving you open to many threats. Your MSP can keep an eye on when your devices are about to stop having security updates, let you know and help you upgrade – staying secure with minimal effort.

WatchGuard AuthPoint

  • WatchGuard AuthPoint is a simple multi-factor authentication program for PC logins and remote working, meaning only you can login to your PC – whether you’re working in the office or remotely. AuthPoint is a managed service which ECS can help integrate into your IT systems to add an extra layer of security to all devices.

Monitoring

  • With 24/7 proactive monitoring, our systems can spot an issue as soon as it happens – notifying you and jumping into action before it can get worse.

Regular patching

  • Managed IT service providers can schedule security updates during time when your business is shut or quiet, meaning you’ll always be up to date and never have to pause work for a pesky update.

Credible product recommendations

  • ECS have years of experience of working with businesses just like yours, so we know what will work best for your needs.

Security audits and planning

  • Consistent audits from an MSP can help you improving compliance with security protocol and allow you to plan and budget for what equipment will benefit you the most. That means less time looking through endless options, freeing you to look at more important things.
